Psychotherapy

Since completing my Masters in Social Work in 1993, I have worked in a variety of social service and mental health settings. I opened a part-time private psychotherapy practice in 2004. I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW).

I work from anti-oppression, client-centred and psychodynamic perspectives. This means that:

  • I respect the goals, perspectives and pace that you bring to therapy.
  • I work to understand you and your experiences in the context of your experiences and relationships (past and present) and the society in which we live.

Main therapeutic approaches I use with individuals are hypnosis, mindfulness, and energy psychology I also borrow also from somatic-oriented, interpersonal, brief solution focused, cognitive-behavioural, motivational counseling and couples counselling Edmonton. I am especially interested in the ways in which the unconscious is helpful in making change and the intersections between emotional and spiritual life.

When working with couples, I am influenced by teachers and writers such as Esther Perel, Stan Tatkin, The Gottman Institute and Sue JohnsonI encourage you to check out all of their websites for videos, articles and other helpful self-help resources.

My experience has included individual, group, couples and family psychotherapy with youth and adults on a variety of issues including:

  • drug and alcohol use
  • sexual orientation and gender identity
  • trauma and loss
  • relationships (monogamous, non-monogamous and polyamorous)
  • sexuality (including kink)
  • cultural/ethnic/racial identities
  • self-esteem
  • low mood and anxiety/worry
  • oppression

I supervise other therapists and have provided training to service providers in group work and working with marginalized groups including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer (LGBTTQ) communities. I have also done academic writing on this latter topic.

At this time, I only provide telephone and video sessions and do not have a physical office.

I am also a writer, and periodically take time away from my practice to write and tour.  You can find out more about that part of my life here.
